Using ChatGPT to Optimize Content for SEO (with prompts)

You can’t escape publishing more content if you want to boost your SEO strategy. More content means more web pages, which increases your chance of discoverability on search engines and social media. Any way you can scale your production to save costs and speed up your SEO initiatives can help you increase sales.

One way to do that is by optimizing your content for SEO. Below are five ways I’ve used ChatGPT and AI to help speed up my content production for SEO.

Using ChatGPT to optimize content for SEO

1. Ask AI to be your content editor

Build an AI editor for your content

You can increase traffic with SEO, but it won’t necessarily lead to conversions. First, you need great content. That includes incorporating subject matter expertise with interviews, adding graphics and images, and producing highly relevant content. But all that goes to waste with a poorly edited article.

Blog article edits should make content easy to read, eliminate distracting errors, and help shape the final argument or “point” of the overall piece.

You can ask an AI tool like ChatGPT to help in that role. For example, you can say, “You are an editor. Remove filler words. Replace passive sentences with active sentences. Edit in the style of Ernest Hemingway.” You can expect clearer, more concise content with a prompt like this.

Playing around and experimenting with editing is essential to optimize your overall process. One idea is to create an editing checklist. You can make a prompt for each step that edits for tone, style, voice, and grammar.

2. Provide a list of keywords for ChatGPT to insert

Plenty of tools, like ClearScope and Surfer SEO, provide secondary keyword suggestions. Some even have AI keyword insert tools. But they aren’t always ideal, and some of those inserts can be awkward to read.

You can use ChatGPT to add keywords for your primary AI keyword insert tool or to get a second opinion on possible insertion. Try a prompt like “Insert the following keywords within my article. Add any necessary content to help make it fit within the context”.

This exercise can save you hours of work a week, and it’s a great way to save brain energy while you work on your SEO production.

3. Get ChatGPT to write your meta-content

You already have the content optimized for SEO. But then comes all the minor steps, like meta descriptions and title tags, which can add more time to your production.

Send your article to ChatGPT and ask for a meta description or similar SEO excerpts. Based on the following article, you can say, “Create a meta description under 160 characters with the keyword [phrase].

Use ChatGPT to create a meta description, like in this example, made for this article.

Not only is this a great way to save time, but you can also ask for a few variations and craft your copy based on the AI’s output.

4. Ask ChatGPT to find the content gaps

After you’ve finished your piece based on SERP research, edited the article, and optimized it for SEO, you can do a final check to ensure that it provides all the value and information readers need.

Ask ChatGPT if there are any content gaps within your article. You can ask something like, “Read my article. Are there any subject gaps within my piece for a [target audience] reader in the [industry]?” ChatGPT will then provide possible headers and topics to include in your piece.

A content gap editing step helps evaluate the overall quality of the subject and content you’re trying to produce. It can also help answer more visitors’ questions and needs, which strengthens the article and supports improved SEO.

5. Generate AI social posts for repurposing

Once you’ve published your article, it’s time to add more distribution channels. You can’t just depend on search engines. If you share content on social media, you increase exposure and the chance for readers to add you for possible backlinks—all benefits that ultimately strengthen SEO.

Ask ChatGPT to repurpose your article into posts with prompts like:

  • “Summarize this article’s five points with the headings and two sentences each for a LinkedIn slideshow.”
  • “Write a summary of this article for an Instagram description.”
  • “Write an introduction to this article so that my audience on Facebook clicks the link to read the rest.”

Using these ChatGPT editing and post-writing methods to optimize for SEO and reach can help grow your business, save you time, and scale your content strategy.

It’s too easy to believe that tools like ChatGPT are the all-in-one solution for content. But the value of your writing isn’t in the words. It’s in the unique perspective you provide. AI only produces repetitive content, nothing truly new. That’s why human input is so important.

Expert writers and professionals can provide original content that connects with readers on a human level. They can offer new perspectives based on experiences and rising trends so that no other AI or human can provide the same content. That’s why creating an SEO piece that’s written by humans, for humans, is essential.

Then, with the help of AI, you can speed up your process and create an efficient system for SEO growth.
